The biggest challenge that keto dieters face is undoubtedly what to do when it comes to eating out with friends and family. The good news is that many restaurants will feature at least one or two items on their menu that’s low carb and keto-friendly.
But what about fast food restaurants? Is it possible to find something that won’t break your diet when you’re in a pinch and need to grab something in a hurry?
As it turns out, it’s actually quite easy to find keto-friendly options at nearly every major fast food chain that you could think of. Everything from McDonald’s to KFC to Burger King has at least one thing on their menu that you can order 100% guilt-free.
In order to help you stick to your diet when you need to order out, here are the 11 best keto fast food options from a variety of restaurants.
Starting with perhaps the most popular fast food chain in the entire world, you actually have quite a few different options to go with for enjoying a keto-friendly meal from McDonald’s. Just about every breakfast sandwich is fine to order so long as you pass on the bread. For the daytime menu, take the same approach -- grilled chicken or a burger without the bun or ketchup.
Unfortunately, with KFC, just about every piece of their fried chicken will contain around 10 grams of net carbs or so. Depending on how flexible you are with your daily macros, that’s either no big deal or an absolute deal breaker. If you’re alright with the carb content though, you can enjoy quite a few options for grilled chicken along with a low carb side of green beans.
#3 Taco Bell
The best approach for ordering at Taco Bell is honestly to just stick with their side’s menu. They unfortunately don’t have any low carb taco shells available so instead of having to throw your taco shell away, simply order a combination of sides to make a quick and cheap keto meal -- a bit of beef or chicken, lettuce, and maybe even some guacamole and you’ll be all set.
#4 Burger King
Not surprisingly, your strategy when it comes to ordering from Burger King is quite similar to McDonald’s. Go with burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches and avoid the bread and ketchup. One of my personal favorite options to go with is their bacon double cheeseburger without the bun, ketchup, or tomatoes.
Chipotle is one of my go to fast food spots for when I’m in need of something that won’t sidetrack my dieting efforts. There’s no shortage of ways to enjoy a 100% keto-friendly meal from here. I like to start by going with their basic salad bowl and then ordering plenty of extras like a double helping of beef along with some tasty low carb sides cheese, sour cream, and queso.
A lot of people are surprised to learn that Subway is incredibly easy to order keto-friendly meals from. Despite the fact they’re primarily a sandwich shop, you can easily turn any of your favorite subs into a salad option. Just add cheese, stick with veggies that are low in carbs, and finish it off with a low carb dressing.
Much like McDonald’s and Burger King, your best bet when ordering from Wendy’s is just sticking with burgers or grilled chicken and leaving out the bun and ketchup. The good news is that Wendy’s has some particularly yummy options like their Baconator. Their chicken cobb salad with the avocado ranch dressing is another great option as well.
If you’re a fan of roast beef, then Arby’s should probably be your go to fast food joint for keto-friendly options. Most of their roast beef sandwiches are good picks to order so long as you leave the bun out. They also have a few good options on their slider and sides menu -- make sure to try the roast turkey farmhouse salad and corned beef ‘n cheese slider without a bun!
#9 In-and-Out Burger
In-and-Out Burger is another one of my favorite places to go when I’m in need of a quick and convenient keto-friendly meal. All you really need to do here is choose to order your meal “protein style” and they will replace your bun with a lettuce wrap. They will even let you order a burger known as the 4x4 with 4 beef patties stacked for those times where you’re feeling extra hungry.
#10 Five Guys Burgers
This is another fast food restaurant that thankfully makes things rather easy when it comes to ordering keto-friendly. You can order their burgers with lettuce wraps or even as a ‘salad’ option. Just about all of their toppings are great for low carb dieters as well -- just steer clear of the ketchup, BBQ sauce, and relish.
#11 Carl’s Jr/Hardee’s
Both of these popular restaurants are actually owned by the same parent company, so they share many of the same menu items. With the exception of their teriyaki burger, you can order any of their burgers with a lettuce wrap. Carl’s Jr does offer one unique option that’s great for keto -- their lettuce-wrapped Thickburger. However, you can still order a similar meal from Hardee’s by just ordering the Thickburger without the bun.
A Few Basic Tips to Follow
Without a doubt, the best way to enjoy meals that are 100% keto-friendly and healthy is by making them yourself at home. However, since that’s not always possible, hopefully this article has given you plenty of ideas for what to order from your favorite restaurants.
